I have a confession to make. I fell in love with a man I met on Tinder. Yes, the dating app with a bad reputation as merely a place to find a hookup.
This is what I’ve learned. Having an authentic connection in a digital format is possible. It is challenging if it’s a romantic relationship. But it is possible. You are able to see the other person’s values by what you talk about day in and out. You find out what they’ve done during the day. You see where they use their time: is it at work, is it to serve their family, playing games, exercising, going out, etc.. I believe that in any platform if your principles and values are strong, they will shine through. And seeing that.. it is possible to fall in love–like I did. I believe my story isn’t unique either, digital has been a passageway for so many love stories connecting people from different parts of the globe.
Therefore, Digital Connections are powerful. I learned so much from listing to Lewis Howes’ Podcast and I’ve never met this guy. A friend of mine wrote a very touching message on my birthday, and I haven’t seen her for close to a decade but I supported during her lowest times, by being available for her online–messages and calls.
She posted this message publicly on my FB page, so I don’t think she will mind if I put it here on my blog:
“Not all moments are for instagram or fb, some are for the moments itself.” This perfectly describes what kind of frndship i have with you, my dearest Joandrea.😙 -Private, silent but worthy for keeps.☺ I know its been 2 days already since ur bday… I’m sorry but i was contemplating since i want to take this chance too to express my gratitude for all the things u have done for me-saying it here! 😉
Thank you Jo for being one of my solid support persons during those times i felt like giving up. Thank you for making me feel valuable during those moments i felt unwanted. Thank u for giving me tough love to bring my stubborn head back to sanity. (I needed that!) Thank you for teaching me how to live, appreciate life more and savour each day when i felt weak and sick when u urself is also fighting a life battle. These really make u sooo special – You are SELFLESS. 💖 Inspite of the “cross u are carrying on ur shoulder” u still offer ur other shoulder to lighten my burden. Your strong support, your day to day “how are u and ok lang yan, normal lang yan, kaya mo yan”, those inspirational quotes and reading materials you sent to me reassured me and gave me courage again and comforted my troubled mind and broken heart. I am humbled by your positive attitude in life and your effort in teaching my heart to be grateful and count all my blessings everyday no matter how small that blessing is… Sana one day maibalik ko lahat sayo yun kabutihan mo sakin. Sobrang THANK U sayo Jo for not giving up on me, sa pagmmahal mo, sa lahat lahat!
❤ Unti-unti nakakaya ko na ulit on my own…☺ I’m sooo happy reading the good news you have shared! Indeed, you are an inspiration. I’m praying for u always! Keep the faith and ur determination to win ur battle against lupus. Yes, miracles do happen! God is good and merciful. 🙏 True it is that the most magical, exquisite, spontaneous things happen when there is no time to grab ur phone. The best moments of our lives have been too fragile, too fleeting, too magical to even try to document them with a camera. And now as Taylor Swift said ” i wish you a lifetime of moments too beautiful to capture on film.” 😊 Happy Birthday Jo! 🎂 🎈🎁🎊🎉
God bless you my friend! Love, Asia💋 [sic – sic erat scriptum]
Therefore, never underestimate the capacity to connect through this medium. It is very different from touch or face to face, but digital remains powerful. So take the extra effort. If like me, you do not often go out to meet people, there are always other ways to connect. And I take those opportunities as often as I can and make the person I am talking to feel I am present, I am here for you.
